Marrying a Salvadoran citizen opens one of the fastest pathways to obtaining the country’s passport. According to the legal framework for Nationalizations and Naturalizations of the DGME (General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners), the main time requirement is established residency.

1. The Time Requirement (The Great Benefit)

Unlike other foreigners who must wait up to 5 years, the spouse of a Salvadoran citizen can be naturalized if they meet the following:

  • Two years of legal residency in the country.

    • This time can be counted before or after the marriage takes place.
    • It adds together the time spent as both a temporary resident and a permanent resident.

2. Essential Documents for the Application

To begin the naturalization process by marriage before the Ministry of Justice and Public Security and the DGME, a file must be prepared that includes:

  • Marriage Certificate: Must be duly registered at the corresponding municipal Mayor’s Office (Alcaldía) in El Salvador.
  • Birth Certificate of the Salvadoran spouse: (Recent and in perfect condition).
  • Valid passport of the foreigner: (Complete copy of all pages and the original for verification).
  • Permanent or Temporary Resident Card: Proving the minimum two years of legal residency.
  • Ratification of the application: A document in which the Salvadoran spouse formally states and ratifies her willingness to support her husband’s naturalization application.
  • Police clearance / No criminal record certificates: From both El Salvador (PNC and Penal Centers) and the foreigner’s country of origin (duly apostilled).
  • Proof of economic stability: Employment certificates, current employment contracts, or tax returns demonstrating that they can support themselves in the country.

3. The Final Step: The Oath of Law

Once the immigration authorities and the Ministry evaluate the case and issue a favorable resolution, the foreigner is summoned for an official ceremony. In this event, the Oath of Law (Protesta de Ley) takes place, where the new citizen swears loyalty, obedience, and submission to the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of El Salvador. After this step, their naturalization agreement is issued, and they can process their DUI (Unique Identity Document) and Salvadoran passport.

El Salvador is one of the countries that allows dual citizenship, so the foreigner will not have to renounce their nationality of origin to adopt Salvadoran citizenship.
